On 5 April 2016 the JRC presented the interactive and collaborative online European Energy Efficiency Platform. This beta platform is conceived to fill the gap opened by scattered data and fragmented knowledge resulting from a rapidly growing energy efficiency market. It is expected to be both a one-stop shop for information retrieval and a meeting point for experts to exchange data and reduce redundant activities.

Policies and Targets
Based on the priority currently given by the European Union to the energy efficiency topic through its Energy Union Package, this feasibility study has focused on the role of location data in support of energy efficiency policies, taking into account the requirements of INSPIRE, EPBD and EED Directives, as well as the CoM initiative. The EU Member States are already due to implement such Directives according to different...

Renovation is an umbrella term which normally describes a variety of interventions in a building: from modernization, retrofit, restoration and rehabilitation to simple maintenance, repairs and routine upgrades. An energy renovation is often “behind the scenes” of many of these actions, with each action delivering different level of energy savings.

IntroductionExpectations are that broadband (BB) equipment will contribute considerably to the electricity consumption of households in European Community in the near future. Depending on the penetration level, the specifications of the equipment and the requirements of the service provider, a total European consumption of up to 50 TWh per year can be estimated for the year 2015.

What is a Typical Meteorological Year (TMY)?A typical meteorological year (TMY) is a set of meteorological data with data values for every hour in a year for a given geographical location. The data are selected from hourly data in a longer time period (normally 10 years or more). For each month in the year the data have been selected from the year that was considered most "typical" for that month.

Buildings
The energy saving potential of the building sector in the EU has enjoyed increasing attention in recent years. Modernising the building sector is also attached to a number of important benefits for many actors in society. It results in reduced energy bills, increased disposable income and improved indoor comfort levels for households. For firms, greater energy efficiency translates to increased productivity and...

The European building stock consumes approximately 40% of primary energy and it is responsible for 36% of the EU greenhouse emissions[1]. A significant reduction of building energy demand is a requisite to meet Europe’s GHG emissions reduction targets[2].

This peer-review paper presents a new mathematical approach to the diffusion of energy efficient technologies using the diffusion of natural processes as an analogy. This approach is applied to the diffusion of the electric arc furnace in Japan. The main advantage offered by the new approach, is the incorporation of an average effect of barriers to, and support measures for, innovation.

With the right set of policy tools, it is generally accepted that governments can play a crucial role in promoting energy efficiency and leveraging more investments in the building sector, especially in the existing stock. Buildings are responsible for 40% of total energy consumption of the EU and their modernisation is considered to be pivotal in our shift towards a low carbon economy.
Current...

Final energy consumption experienced in Europe an increase in absolute terms of 10% between 1990 and 2006 where the consumption peaked at 1190 Mtoe. Over this period, the share of the final energy consumption of residential and non-residential buildings increased from 35.4% to 37.7% . This made buildings the largest single end-use of energy in Europe.
